He is my son. He came home from college for the weekend. He broke up with his girlfriend and needed some family time. Eric made him chocolate chip cookies and I made a big batch of chicken cutlets. His available sisters came over to hang out with him, he did homework, Eric did his laundry, we watched a movie together, he visited neighbors, he went to church, he spent some quality time with his good friend Picasso. I drove him back to school Sunday night and we chatted during the hour long drive. He asked me questions about my life and told me stories from his own. Many of the best moments of parenting happen during a ride in the car. I pulled up to his dorm and he retrieved his laundry from the trunk, kissed my cheek through the open window, and I drove away. I had to turn the car around to make my way out, driving by his dorm again. He stood in the dark walkway with his bags waiting for me to drive past him. I slowed down thinking he had forgotten something. He just blew me a kiss and waved me on, waiting. I will never forget the image of him standing there in the dark, watching me drive away. There is no greater gift than to love and be loved unconditionally. My children are my greatest accomplishment. They are the best thing I ever did. I am beyond blessed.
